Purpose
The Gait Belt is intended for use when lifting, ambulating or transferring patients. It is not to be used as a safety restraint in the wheelchair, chairs of any kind, or in bed.
USING THE GAIT BELT
Place belt around patient’s waist only. Do not place belt around patient’s chest. For metal buckle, secure buckle by threading metal-tipped end through buckle hinge, over teeth, and through slot at back of buckle. For delrin buckle, secure buckle by inserting male end of belt into female end. (Note: To release buckle, simulaneously press tabs at top and bottom of buckle.) Make certain that belt fits snugly. Leave enough room so that you can get both hands around webbing. Grasp belt at patient’s back and patient’s right or left side. It is recommended that a right-handed caregiver place his/her right hand at the patient’s back and left hand at patient’s left side. Left-handed caregivers should do the opposite. To achieve your most secure grip slide hands upwards under the belt with palms facing away from patient. Grasp belt webbing securely.
IMPORTANT
Before ambulating, transferring or lifting patient be certain that you have the physical capability or supporting that patient. This is especially important if the patient is large or very heavy. If necessary, two caregivers may be required for patient safety.
LAUNDERING
This device may be laundered and dried at temperatures up to 180OF (82OC). Bleaching is not recommended. Do not place Gait Belt in a water extractor as it will crush the buckle.
