Gait Belt Application & Use:

1. Placement: Place the belt around the patient’s waist only. Never place the belt around the chest.
2. Secure the Buckle:
   • Metal Buckle: Secure by threading the metal-tipped end through the buckle hinge, over the teeth, and back through the slot (See Illustration A).
   • Delrin (Plastic) Buckle: Secure by inserting the male end into the female end until it clicks (See Illustration B).
     Important: Position the Delrin buckle behind the patient to prevent them from accessing or releasing the buckle during transfer.

3. Check the Fit: Ensure the belt fits snugly against the waist. Leave just enough room so that you can slide both hands firmly under the webbing.
4. Proper Grip Technique:
   • Grasp the belt at the patient’s back and side.
   • Right-Handed Caregivers: Place your right hand at the patient’s back and left hand at their left side.
   • Left-Handed Caregivers: Do the opposite.
   • Hand Position: Slide your hands upward under the belt with your palms facing away from the patient to achieve the strongest grip.
5. Assess Load: Before lifting or ambulating, ensure you have the physical capacity to support the patient’s weight. If necessary, use two caregivers for the task.

Care & Maintenance:

• Geo-Pattern Belts (Nylon): Clean with a standard spray-and-wipe cleaner. Disinfect using a non-chlorine disinfectant.
• Stars & Stripes Belts (Cotton): Safe to launder and dry at temperatures up to 180°F (82°C). Do not use bleach.
