Find answers to commonly asked questions below.
-
Is it legal to wear a plate carrier?
It is legal to wear a plate carrier in the United States for most civilians, as long as you are not committing a crime or restricted by prior felony convictions. Federal law does not prohibit owning or wearing plate carriers, and they are commonly used for training, airsoft, hunting, and emergency preparedness. However, some states have specific regulations regarding body armor use in public or during protests, so it’s important to check local laws. Wearing body armor while committing a crime can lead to enhanced penalties. For law-abiding citizens, plate carriers are a legal and practical way to carry ballistic plates for added protection.
-
What is the best plate carrier?
The best plate carrier depends on comfort, durability, and mission requirements, but popular options include models from Crye Precision, Ferro Concepts, and Shellback Tactical. These carriers are designed to hold ballistic plates securely while offering adjustable straps, breathable materials, and modular attachment points for gear. High-quality carriers use rugged fabrics like 500D or 1000D Cordura for strength and longevity. Features such as quick-release buckles, MOLLE webbing, and padded shoulder straps enhance usability and comfort during extended wear. When choosing a plate carrier, consider weight distribution, plate compatibility, and intended use—whether for tactical operations, training, or personal defense.
-
Do plate carriers stop bullets?
Plate carriers themselves do not stop bullets; they are simply the framework that holds ballistic plates. The level of protection depends on the plates inserted into the carrier. Soft armor panels provide handgun protection, while hard armor plates rated Level III or IV can stop rifle rounds, including high-velocity threats. Without plates, a carrier offers no ballistic protection and functions only as a gear platform. For maximum safety, ensure your carrier is properly fitted and equipped with plates that meet NIJ standards for your threat level.

Can Kevlar stop an AK-47?
Kevlar alone cannot stop an AK-47 round because it is designed for handgun-level threats, not rifle fire. Standard Kevlar vests rated Level II or IIIA protect against most pistol rounds but fail against the 7.62x39mm cartridge fired by AK-47 rifles. To stop these rounds, you need hard armor plates rated at Level III or IV, which are made from ceramic, steel, or polyethylene. These plates are inserted into plate carriers and provide rifle-level protection. While Kevlar is excellent for lightweight, concealable protection, it is not suitable for high-powered rifle threats.
