Pool Access

A pool lift is an assistive device designed to help individuals with limited mobility safely enter and exit a swimming pool or spa. These lifts typically feature a seat or platform attached to a mechanical arm powered by batteries, hydraulics, or water pressure. Pool lifts are essential for ADA compliance in public pools and are widely used in residential settings for accessibility. They promote independence, reduce fall risks, and allow people with disabilities to enjoy aquatic therapy or recreation without physical strain. Options include fixed, portable, and rotating models to suit different pool designs and user needs.

The safest way to assist a disabled person into a pool is by using an ADA-compliant pool lift. These devices allow for secure transfers from a wheelchair to the pool via a powered or manual seat. Alternatives include sloped entries, motorized ladders, or aquatic wheelchairs designed for submersion. Always ensure proper communication and use safety straps during transfers. For public facilities, ADA guidelines require at least one accessible entry method, such as a pool lift or ramp. This approach minimizes injury risk and promotes independence for individuals with mobility challenges.

The cost of installing a pool lift varies by type and complexity. Residential models typically range from $2,000 to $9,000, while commercial lifts can exceed $12,000. Anchoring systems add $500–$1,000, and professional installation averages $1,500. Portable lifts may reduce installation costs since they require no permanent anchors. Factors influencing price include weight capacity, rotation features, and ADA compliance. High-end models with 360° rotation and bariatric support are more expensive but offer greater versatility and durability.

Most standard pool lifts support 300–400 lbs, which meets ADA minimum requirements. Heavy-duty or bariatric models can handle 450–600 lbs, making them suitable for larger users or those requiring additional support. When selecting a lift, consider the user’s weight and any accessories, such as aquatic wheelchairs. Always verify the manufacturer’s specifications to ensure safety and compliance.
