Jorgensen Labs J1494C Aspir-Guard Large 3cm, 3-Pack

The Jorgensen Labs J1494C is the Large Aspir-Guard, a 3cm oropharyngeal guard supplied three to a package. Aspir-Guard prevents fluids and dental debris from being accidentally aspirated during a routine veterinary dental procedure.

Aspir-Guard is a dehydrated PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) donut-shaped product. When rehydrated it has a soft, gentle sponge-like feel. It is placed over the distal end of the endotracheal tube prior to intubation, just outside the epiglottis, and its attached strings are used to tie it to the roll gauze or IV tubing used to secure the ET tube to the patient. After the patient is intubated, the Aspir-Guard is pushed into place to block the oropharynx from fluid aspiration; once the procedure is finished it is removed gently together with the ET tube. Jorgensen Laboratories notes that numerous publications and textbooks state the standard of care requires the use of a material to block the oropharynx from accidental aspiration of the fluids that accumulate during every dental procedure.

This page covers only model J1494C, the Large 3cm size. The Small 2cm (J1494A) and Medium 2.5cm (J1494B) sizes are separate codes, and all three sizes are also sold together as the J1494S set. The current store page describes this code as an activated charcoal scavenging canister for waste anesthetic gas; that is not this product, and those claims are removed.
