The Aesculap Caiman 5 Maryland is a bipolar seal-and-cut surgical instrument with a fine curved Maryland jaw, supplied through Jorgensen Laboratories under code J1480MS and listed by Jorgensen as 'CAIMAN MARYLAND FORCEPS 5MM X 36CM'. Aesculap (B. Braun) documents the Caiman 5 Maryland for vessel sealing and tissue dissection in laparoscopic and open surgery, with the 36 cm shaft among its documented working lengths. It is used with the Aesculap Lektrafuse HF generator, which is a separate product (Jorgensen code J1480) and is not included.
Aesculap documents a jaw design unlike other sealers: the lower jaw hinge causes the tip of the instrument to close first, capturing tissue and preventing slippage, after which the upper and lower jaws compress tissue in parallel, creating even compression forces from distal to proximal for uniform compression and one seal confidence. The fine curved Maryland jaw design allows increased dissection performance and enhanced tip visualization.
